Survey Project

This project must be done in groups of size 3-5.  Your project will be graded entirely on your group's oral presentation and display of your data during class.  Projects will be graded by members of the class using a checklist rating scale (see below) and by me.

Your group will come up with a survey topic.  Your group will then sign up for your topic.  Each topic can only be used once, so sign up early and pay attention to the topics already taken.  A good rule of thumb for deciding on a topic and questions on your questionnaire is this:  Don't ask anything that you would feel uncomfortable discussing with your grandmother.  During your presentation you will have to explain why you selected this topic and why you think it was worth researching.  You will design a questionnaire containing at least four and no more than eight questions relating to your topic.  Your topic and questionnaire must be approved by me before you hand out your questionnaire to your subjects.

Your group will then collect survey data from at least 50 subjects.  Your data collection method should be the random sample.  We will discuss this method during class.

Your group will decide how to organize and present the data orally and what type of visual aide to use.  Types of visual aids used in the past are posters, visualizer, overheads, powerpoint.  This , of course, is classroom dependent.  Whatever the visual method you use be sure that it is large enough to be seen by people in the back of the classroom.  You will have exactly 10 minutes to complete your presentation, including set up and questions afterward.   The last minute should be devoted to questions from the class.   Carefully plan what each person in your group will say so that you will be able to finish in 9 minutes or less to leave time for questions.  You will have to summarize some results rather than going into a lot of detail.  Refer to the checklist rating scale to see the categories you will be rated on.  Use this information to help plan your presentation.

Be sure to print your names on the board at the beginning of your presentation--raters will need this information!

Project presentations will take place on the last 3 or 4 days of the semester (not exam week).   Plan to be present in class and ready to present on every one of the days (there will be a schedule, but in case groups are absent or don't use up all their time, we may get ahead of schedule, and will need people ready to present earlier than scheduled).  We also need you to be in class to rate the other projects.

The day you present your project, everyone in the class including me will fill out one of the copies of the rating scale after your presentation and hand it in.  I will compute the median of all the overall ratings your project received.  I will then factor in my score.  No project grades will be given out until all projects have been presented.

Rate the presentation in each of the following categories by assigning each category a whole number between 1 and 10 inclusive.  10 is the highest possible rating in each category.  10's should only be given to truly outstanding projects.

_____  RATIONALE.  Could the presenters explain why they chose their topic. Are you convinced that their topic was worth researching?

_____  SAMPLING PROCEDURE AND DESIGN OF SURVEY QUESTIONS.  Did the presenters explain and justify their sampling procedure?  Was their sampling procedure random?  Were the questions worded to avoid bias?

_____  DATA DISPLAY.  Were the results displayed in an attractive and legible manner?  Was the way in which the data was displayed appropriate?

_____  ORAL PART OF PRESENTATION.  Was the presentation interesting?  Well organized?  Easy to understand?

_____  QUESTIONS.  How well were the presenters able to handle questions about their project?

_____  OVERALL PROJECT GRADE.  Add the numbers in the 5 blanks above.  Use your calculator.  Check your addition!  (This number should not be between 1 and 10.  It should be between 5 and 50)
